Renaissance chateau rebuilt in Romanesque style
About the place
The castle in Breclav is a Renaissance castle building built on the foundations of an older castle, which was rebuilt in the 19th century by the Lichtensteins in the Romantic style. Currently, only the lookout on the castle tower is accessible. Its history dates back to the 11th century, when a frontier castle was built on the site of today's castle after 1041. In 1534 the estate was bought by the brothers from Žerotín, under whom the old castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau. The chateau was given its present appearance at the beginning of the 19th century, when the Lichtenstein family built the Lednice-Valtice area. In 1945, the castle became the property of the Czechoslovak state, and today it is under the administration of the town, which is preparing its reconstruction.
